David Bowie

David Bowie is an English musician, actor, record producer and arranger. He was active in five decades of popular music and was known for his frightening image and his high pitched and distinctive voice.

He has produced three dozen or so albums and he had ruled the 1970's music indrusty with them, also he reinvented new romantic music.

In 1975 his hit song 'Fame' (co written by john lennon) went to number one in the U.S charts; this was his first major american crossover success.

Also the videos show the outrageous make up, especially in the video 'prince charming' by Adam and the Ants, also the rock and roll lifestyle (shaking their heads).

Goth: Researching a Famous Act

Bauhaus Bauhaus were a English rock band that formed in 1987. The group consisted of Peter Murphy (vocals), Daniel Ash (guitar) and David J (bass); they were all from Northampton. The band started off as Bauhaus 1919 however within a year of formation they shortened their name into Bahaus.

They were considered to be the first gothic rock group because of their dark and gloomy sound and appearance. Bauhaus broke up in 1983, Peter began a solo career and the other band members formed Tones On Tail and later Love on Rockets. They both had more commercial success than what they had in Bahaus. They then reunited in 2008 and produced a album 'Go Away White', they also went on tour and pleased their old fans

These music examples i have used show the dark and rough characteristics of Gothic Rock.

They combine dark and heavy keyboard music to create a foreboding feeling, also the lyrics address dark themes. Moreover, we hear the scything guitar patterns, high pitched basslines and the drums that define the music genre.

These magazine examples show the typical fashion trends and the influences from gothic movies. The fashion trends show the dark make up, dyed hair, eyeliner and piercings, which link into their music genre which contains dark and foreboding themes. Also the significant use of black represents their dark music genre and their dark, morbid and erotic personalities.

Punk: Researching a famous Punk act

Green Day

Green day is an American rock trio that formed in 1987 in Berkeley, California after members of Sweet Children and Lookouts came together at a party. The band consists of Bille Joe Armstrong (vocals and guitar), Mike Dirnt (Vocals, bass guitar) and Tre Cool (drums, percussion).

They recorded their debut EP, '1,000 hours' in 1989 and they then changed their name to Green Day shortly after.

Their first album 39/Smooth was released in 1990 on Lookout Records on vinyl and cassete.

Their albums Kerplunk in 1991 and Dookie in 1994 made them known across america and it produced alot of success for them.

They had their most successful album 'American Idiot' in 2004, which won them a Grammy Award and several awards at the MTV Music Video Awards in 2005. The album achieved popularity worldwide, charting 26 countries and reaching number one in 19 of them; since then American Idiot has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

These music videos represent the characteristics of Punk music.

They show the use of guitars, high pitched vocals and drums,the instruments used are typical of a punk song.

There is the brutal and monochromatic punk songs (Green Day) that are hardcore style and are played fast and at a high volume. Whereas, there is some calmer and more teenager targeted punk music (Avril Lavigne), these type of songs are similar to pop because the lyrics talk of love and are specifically targeted to a youth market; the lyrics link into a teenagers everyday life.

These magazines exemplify the punk genre's lifestyle and characteristics. The men's hair is long, similar to Heavy Metal however, it is not as rough and dark as Heavy Metal appearances, also the men in the magazines have facial hair and suits which show how masculine and more formal than other types of rock they are; used to attract the female audience.

The instruments also show the music genre, guitars and drums are typical instruments of the genre. Furthermore, the women are portrayed with make up, funky hair (dyed pink) and colourful tops to signify how fun and funky their music is. Also the women are portrayed with more suttle and less obvious make up, this contrasts with the goth subculture, where they wear heavy make up and use dark colours to represent their attitude and music style.

Mariah Carey

Biography and Career:

Mariah Carey was born in Long Island, New York. Her parents are Patricia Hickey (irish-american) and Alfred Roy Carey (African-American/Venezuelan). Being a multiethnic family, the Careys edured racial slurs, hostility and sometimes even voilence, causing the family to frequently relocate throughout New York and Rhode Island areas. The strain on the family resulted in the divorce of Mariah's parents when she was just three years old.

She spent much of her time home alone so she turned to music as an outlet. Mariah Carey began singing at around the age of three, performing for the first time in public during primary school and she began writing her own songs by secondary school. Mariah Carey was absent from school frequently because of her popularity as a demo singer for local recording studios. Her renown within the Long Island music scene gave her opportunities to work with musicians such as Gavin Christopher and Ben Margulies; she co-wrote material with them for he demo tape. After moving to New York City, Mariah Carey worked numerous part time jobs to pay for her rent and she completed five hundred hours of beauty school. She eventually became a backup singer for Brenda K.Starr.

In 1988, Mariah met Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola at a party, where Starr gave him Carey's demo tape. Mottola played the tape while leaving and was very impressed with what he heard. He returned to the party to find Mariah, but she had left. However, mottola tracked her down and signed her to a recording contract. This surreal story became part of the standard publicity surrounding Mariah's entrance into the music indrusty.

In June of 1990 Mariah Carey made her debut with "Mariah Carey" which entered at 73, but on August 4 1990 it reached 1. Mariah Carey is the only artist since the Beatles and Elvis Presley to have so many 1 singles and albums. Along with numerous awards, she is the most successful selling female artist in music history and is the only female artist to have straight 1 singles and albums.
Mariah Carey married Tommy Mottola on June the 5th 1993, but they divorced 5 years later (5 March 1998).

These music examples exemplifies the characteristics of R&B music.

They show the melodic lines, strong rhythmic beats and with repeated choruses. Moreover, it shows how some modern R&B (Rihanna's songs) have had influences from punk, pop and disco to appeal to a modern audience and to make a change from older R&B songs to make it evident that the songs aren't being copied and are their own.

These magazines show the characteristics of the R&B music genre because they have famous R&B stars, also they show the fashion sense of the culture which is sophisticated and formal (the sweaters and hats of Boys 2 Men), although there are erotic elements that appeal to their target audience which is teenagers, similar to the pop genre the lyrics and images target the youth market because they talk about relationships and love and some of the magazines have young stars which target a young audience; the image of Rihanna there is use of a umbrella which is the title of her hit song which was at #1 in the U.K Charts for a whooping nine weeks!
